GreenPass is an emerging mobile app designed to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19 by offering users a way to privately and securely share health related data. Backed by a non-profit, they want to support the global economy in reopening while protecting people from invasive public health driven data requests by governments.

Today, The GreenPass is rolling out an updated version and will allow users to login with BlockStack (STX) login, so that users can access with single, secure BlockStack ID.

The app focuses on personal health data management with strong privacy protection. GreenPass generates a colored QR code based on the status of dynamic health data and test entries, and enables various essential scenarios, including but not limited to merchant, school, office, travel & hotel, and the vulnerable nursing homes.

GreenPass uses blockchain and distributed ledger technology to ensure data integrity and offers better data authenticity, tamper resistance, and traceability. “We believe the right to privacy is fundamental to society. Decentralized technology would allow governments and organizations to face problems like the spread of Covid-19 at scale without sacrificing individual privacy or security. With GreenPass and other apps like it empowering users, we’re moving toward a reality where public health and privacy are no longer at odds.” Muneeb Ali, Blockstack Cofounder.

Decentralized Identity (DID), Verifiable Credentials (VC), and the distributed storage are the underlying technology used to power the app, but GreenPass also supports well-known centralized authentication methods like Google and Facebook.

“With Elastos DID Ledger and now Blockstack Login integrations, the app can guarantee the data ownership and the permission based data sharing always stay within the individual’s control, something we believe is essential for global adoption and core to our mission.” Brian Xin, GreenPass Project Founder.

As economies look to reopen, there is growing demand for a service like GreenPass to bridge the gap and help de-risk global travel and events without compromising individual privacy and security.
